The Government of Xocrium
King/Queen of Xocrium
Xocrium is ruled by a monarch, the current one being King Loreto Phoenine. Right to rule is granted to head of the current dominant founding house. Depending on how they want their name read, Kings/Queens are addressed formally as (Using Loreto as an example): King Loreto born of the House Phoenine, Lord of Everguard, Warden of the Grand Knighthood, and King of Xocrium.
The dominant house is decided with a special jousting tournament, in which only the heads of the founding houses can participate. Jousting is a royal event where Xocrium chooses one of their founding houses to become the 'main house' or the royal house during that time. A joust only happens when a former monarch passes on with no heirs. The last joust was a century or longer ago, after the conquest of Padwell, where one of Loreto’s ancestors won the joust for House Phoenine. Of the original twelve founding houses, only five remain.
The heads each houses gain points by knocking the other heads off of their mounts with a non-lethal lance; although it still hurts a good deal to be hit by one. When a house has the most points and has played against all the houses, they are crowned as the new royal house.
Even though the last joust happened long ago, all of the founding houses still train for the joust just in case. When a joust is called, everyone in Xocrium who can shows up to watch the event and the eventual crowning of the new king/queen.

Regional Rulers - Lords & Ladies of Xocrium
Lords/Ladies rule over each province in Xocrium. These titles are carried on through all founding houses, families who helped found the Kingdom of Xocrium and the Knighthood. Each Lord/lady is usually considered the head of their entire house (Meaning a high member in the main family of the house). This Title also has a great history in Xocrium before it was founded as a Kingdom. The Division of Feathers
The Division of Feathers are an elite group (or guild) of secret police tasked with bringing order and peace to the provinces of Xocrium.
Whether it be through assassinating unruly political leaders such as the infamous Savius Reinulf, silencing those who dare speak in support of the Padwellans despite all they chaos they have caused and the lives they have taken, or through keeping track of Padwellan movements such as new Redwing patrols, they do anything required to protect the Kingdom.
Because of that, the information they carry has the tendency to both destroy and create legends and myths. Read more about the ranks of the Division below:

Towns & Cities
Grand Wardens are unique individuals that are either employed or knighted by the Lord/Lady of their province. These knights are specially trained to protect and serve the citizens of the city or cities they are sent to. These knights are addressed as ‘Ser (Insert name here)’ or ‘Dame (Insert name here)’.
Other than being under control by their Lords/Ladies, the townsfolk of cities with the help of their local Wardens can truly govern themselves.

Other Roles
The Royal Court consists of all Lords/Ladies, some appointed Wardens, and several noblemen and women from all provinces in Xocrium. The Court is only there as advisors for the King/Queen and only has as much power as the King/Queen gives them if it does not deal with their own provinces.
Noble Houses usually hold official titles but there are some who don’t. Noble houses are measured and defined by their social influence, their wealth, and their assets. Notable Noble Houses are the founding Houses of Xocrium.

Inheritance
Non-appointed titles are passed to the eldest child of the previous titleholder, regardless of gender, legitimacy of birth, or competence. If the previous title holder passes without any heirs, their title is passed to the next house with the same political power (Such as a brother/sister house) or (If there are no related houses) their title is sent to the capital to be given to a new holder.
See the King/Queen section for more information on the inheritance of that role when all normal candidates have died.

Gaining & Losing Power
Positions that come with great power are rarely lost or taken. Xocrians believe in the divine right of their founders for a reason, trying to take that away or trying to get rid of the system that has kept Xocrium running since the day it was founded will result in you most likely losing your life (and the lives of both your house/ your supporters and their houses).
Appointed title holders are usually the ones who are most at risk of losing their title, either through just termination or demotion. Demotion can happen for several reasons; being that you displease the ruler who gave you your title or not having enough support or political power to keep the title in check. Knights and Wardens are great examples of this.
