Character Updates
Table of Contents
Want to update your character’s artwork/design or add something to their bio? This section details the process of how to go about doing that!
Character updates are free (aside from occasionally requiring a Mutation Mod, or item slots if you’re adding a new mutation) to apply, but we do require you to try to keep your character’s background and appearance at least somewhat consistent.
You can change elements of their design and history, but they should be recognizable as the same character. (Unless you’re applying a mutation to give an explicit in-universe justification for them looking and acting wholly different.)

Info
- To update a character’s art or bio, submit a request to the #character-updates channel with the form in the section below.
- If updating a character’s bio, please indicate which sections have been updated so we know what to edit.
- The general rule is that you can expand on things however much you’d like, and alter things to an extent, but they should be recognizable as the same character.
- If you would like to add a mutation, you will need to grab a magical/extreme/etc slot from the Bits Store.
- If you want to change the presentation of a magical/peculiar/extreme mutation (within the same ‘theme’), grab a “Mutation Mod” slot from the Bits Store.

No longer connecting with a character and want to trade them to a new owner? This section goes over how to do that. The new owner must be a member of the RoS discord server and have a valid DeviantArt username that the character’s profile can be linked to.
Info
- To transfer a character to a new owner, submit a request to the #character-updates channel with the form in the section below.
- Please specify a single, specific new owner for the character! Do not submit requests that are open-ended (ex; “anyone who wants them can have them”).
- If you’re not sure who to transfer them to, use the #ads or one of the character discussion channels to see if anyone's interested!
- If you’re not sure who to transfer them to, use the #ads or one of the character discussion channels to see if anyone's interested!
- The new owner MUST have an open character slot and spaces in their purchase limits for the transferred character’s slots. (Ex; someone with 3/3 necromancer characters would not be able to be transferred a fourth).
- It’s up to the players involved to arrange for any trackers/notes docs/etc to be archived and transferred to the new owner. If you’re on the receiving end of a transfer request, make sure you ask for links to old content for the character if you’re interested in keeping track of those.
- Please note that once you transfer a character, the new owner is under no obligation to trade them back in the future. Make sure that this is something that you're comfortable with before submitting a request for it!
- That being said, it’s absolutely okay to reach out to someone you transferred a character to and see if they’d be open to trading them back; however, if they say no, that’s it.

No longer connecting with a character and want to remove them from play semi-permanently, or planning on leaving the group and wanting to free up the slots you were holding onto? Please submit a request to have your character retired!
Please note that although retiring a character can be undone, it removes the character from play while active; they will be ineligible to be drawn/written about for Bits, used in RPs/events, quests, etc. If you want to continue using a character in RoS in any way, you may not want to retire them.

Info
- To retire a character, submit a request to the #character-updates channel with the form in the section below.
- When retired, the character’s profile will be kept on Lady-of-the-Spire but be marked as “RETIRED”. You will not be refunded the items you used on them, but their character slots will be reopened and they’ll have the items you bought for them removed from your purchase limits.
- So, if you retired a Familiar character and you had 5/5 slots filled for that, it’d be moved down to 4/5 and the store number would be updated accordingly.

- You may un-retire a character for 50 Bits if you change your mind. They’ll enter a 6-month “cooldown” period before you can retire them again. You will also need to have open slots for the items used on them.
- Instead of retiring a character, you can also trade them to another member who has a stronger idea of what to do with them.

No longer interested in playing a character, but want them to still exist in the background of your main PC’s adventures? As of January 24th, 2023, we are now allowing players to convert existing characters into NPCs.
NPC’ing a character will allow you to earn a bonus for including them in writing and artworks, as well as continue to involve them in your character’s backgrounds and storylines, though they will be unable to earn EXP or participate in Story Mode. You may un-NPC a character in the future, though repeatedly doing so may lock the character into being a player character only. If you still have a lot of storytelling to do with the character, you may want to consider keeping them a PC.

Killing off a Character
Please note that this is NOT a required process for reviving a character!
Need to mark a character (or NPC you made) as deceased as the consequence of events in their story? This section goes over the process of doing so!
Please note that this is for permanently killing them off. While you may change your mind and revive them in the future, this is not a necessary step for reviving a character, if that’s what you’ve got planned.
Please note that this is for permanently killing them off. While you may change your mind and revive them in the future, this is not a necessary step for reviving a character, if that’s what you’ve got planned.
Info
- To have a character marked as deceased, you just need to go through #character-updates in RoS’ discord server with the form in the section below.
- The character will have their profile marked as deceased with the date of their death, but will still be considered “part” of RoS’ story.
- Similarly to retiring, they’ll have their Store Items refunded to your purchase limits & the store, but not sent back to your inventory.
- (So you’d be able to buy a new Peculiar Mutation slot, for example, but not automatically have it put back into your inventory.)
- Dead characters may still be drawn/written about for Bits, but cannot participate in Events, Quests, or RPs set after the time of their death.
- Note that as of current times, Familiar characters cannot be killed.
- This is semi-permanent. If you intend on killing off and reviving a character you do not need to do this. After six months have passed and if you change your mind, you may purchase the necromantic revival item from the store or get a Necromancer character to revive them, provided you still have room in your character slots & purchase limits.
- Note that Harvest Mage and Necromancer characters currently cannot be revived.
