Basic Traits
|
Standing at 6’ at the shoulder on average, darklings are well-suited to their nocturnal cave-dwelling lifestyles. They are capable of folding their wings tightly against their bodies to squeeze into the nooks and crannies of the cave system they inhabit. They are one of two species of dragon in the Realm to possess a wyvern-like build, with a single pair of legs and wings.
Darklings are covered head to tail in thick fur to keep them warm. The length and texture of their pelts vary between individuals; some darklings might have long, silky fur, while others may only be covered in a layer of short hair. They have three pairs of eyes and a set of long, fuzzy ears on their head. Their feet have little nubs that work as their thumbs. They can use these for gripping and hanging upside down. Each digit has sharp talons to climb and hold onto walls. Colours & PatternsAs their name might imply, darklings come in dark, earth-toned colours - browns, greys, blacks, etc - with few exceptions. However, darklings with deep red, purple, dark green and even dark blue fur are not uncommon. They may have a variety of coat patterns and markings, though countershading is common.
Darkling eyes tend to be darkly coloured or black with no noticeable sclera. Each pair of eyes should match in the absence of conditions like chimerism or heterochromia. Albino darklings are very rare, and have grey, white or pink coats and pink eyes. |
The Voidseers
Voidseers are rare amongst the darklings and of mysterious origins. They resemble regular members of their species in most regards save for their eyes; if you look closely, one can see what looks like stars and galaxies in them (as some say, the “stars staring back”).
Born with normal darkling colours, voidseers who use their abilities frequently will begin to lose colour on their fur and, if they abuse their ability, in their eyes, eventually leading to blindness.
Eventually, if they indulge in their visions, a Voidseer’s eyes will go blind. Either they will look clouded or they will look dark with what looks like stars and galaxies in them. Forever lost to the goddess She Who is Nothing.
