Sundrake Appearance
Common Sundrakes
Sundrakes are sleek, slim dragons with graceful proportions. They can have linked, halo-shaped horns that are either smooth or pronged, or be born with antlers or a head frill instead. Some are born with a frill along their neck, while others lack such adornment; in either case, their wings and frill can be folded tightly against their body, allowing them to slip through narrow passages.
Their wings are long but narrow, and connect with fins that extend all the way down their tail. Markings vary from stripes to spots to nothing at all, and some are born with complex black patterns resembling stained glass. Sundrakes come in a variety of patterns, with glossy, iridescent scales. They can come in all of the many hues of precious metals and gemstones, from hard steel to iridescent opal. |

Suntouched Sundrakes
The Suntouched are what occurs when an egg gets more sunlight than it needs. If exposed to sunlight for six months time, the egg will turn from a healthy white colour to a glowing golden hue. Further exposure can be deadly, so most sundrake parents remove their eggs from sunlight as soon as it takes on this new colour.
They are considered blessed by Hyleg, the sun god, and aristocrats do everything they can to ensure that their offspring are Suntouched. Their scales can be any colour that's possible for a normal sundrake, although warm colours like yellow-green and copper are more common than blue or purple. Their scales give off a warm, sunny glow at all times. |
Shade Sundrakes
Sundrake development is influenced by the amount of sunlight they are exposed to while in the shell. Most sundrakes receive a moderate amount; those exposed too little or far more than normal look different.
Shades are what happens if a sundrake egg is deprived of sunlight while developing; they are smaller than their regular brethren, and at all times an inky black smoke rises from their scales. The amount of ‘smoke’ depends on the Shade's emotions; a calm dragon has a relaxed and thin veil of smoke, while intense emotions are accompanied by angry black clouds. Shades hatch the same hues as normal sundrakes; the only sign is the pair of long, saber-teeth in their mouth. About an hour after hatching, their scales darken; dull blues, burgundies, greens, greys and black are all common colours. |
